The creation of something new is not accomplished by the
intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity.

The creative mind plays with the objects it loves”

The dominating forces of nature are the inspiration that drives me to paint … the discovery of a whole new way of seeing is like putting on rose colored glasses. Expressing the beauty that I see in the textures, intense colors, and mysterious deep shadows evokes an emotion that becomes imbedded in my paintings.

I am an experimental artist. I incorporate good design principles using light against darks, opaque's with transparents, focal points and areas of rest. These principles are evident in each painting but the point at which the painting becomes a magical self expression is in the moment when I listen to the canvas, moving and stroking with an inner voice that’s experimenting, playful and yet focused on becoming a new and unique form.

Camping, hiking, skiing and enjoying the rain inspired me at a very young age to capture the drama of the glorious Pacific Northwest through drawing, watercolors, crayons and storytelling.

Moves to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico inspired new forms of expression that reflected the majestic mountains, bubbling streams, big skies and glowing sunsets. Soon, my work evolved, becoming looser and bolder. Previous boundaries were expanded into abstract landscape and then pure abstractions … launching my career as an experimental artist.

Abstract landscapes and big sky paintings start with an un-textured, smooth canvas. Applying layers of vibrant yet, blended colors makes the sky come alive, while minimizing the amount of landscape offers a more sophisticated look for the viewer.

Conversely, pure abstracts require a heavily textured ground that incorporates fabrics, metals, nails, grout or cement. The framework of the painting is built with this intriguing texture. A dark layer of paint unifies the under painting while a build up of colors dragged over the texture brings the shapes into form. The culmination happens with final strokes of gold leaf or metallic paints setting off the painting. The goal is achieved when many viewers all have different perspectives on what they see. It’s a perfect painting when the viewer is left to their own imagination…….enjoying the textures, colors and forms.

Regardless of style, I paint the intricacies of nature and the tremendous hope that it brings for a new tomorrow. It’s my desire, that my art evokes a strong pleasant emotion in the collector. I hope that it leaves you with a fond memory, a smile on your face and tremendous joy in your new purchase.
